There was a rise in the number of cholera cases reported in May and

early June 2011, particularly around Port-au-Prince and in the

southern peninsula (Grand Anse, Nippes, Sud and Sud-Est) as well as in

Artibonite and Nord. This increase may be due in part to the beginning

of the rainy season and the flooding that hit the capital. Between 2

May 2011 and 12 Jun 2011, a total of 18 182 new cases were notified in

Port-au-Prince, where 90 percent of the 2300 beds in cholera treatment

facilities were occupied. As of 21 Jun 2011, the occupancy rate had

dropped to 72 percent.

On 12 Jun 2011, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) reported 344 623

cases of cholera and 5397 related deaths (average case fatality rate

1.6 percent) since the beginning of the outbreak in October 2010.

Poor access to clean water and proper sanitation remains the main

challenge in fighting the epidemic. Water-trucking is now down to 20

percent of what it was after the earthquake. According to the Water

and Sanitation Cluster, about 1/3rd of the non-governmental

organizations (NGOs) supporting camps in Port-au-Prince will be

closing down their water-trucking and sewage removal activities over

the next few months because funds are running out. Lack of sanitation

facilities and the maintenance of existing latrines remain critical

problems in the camps. WHO/PAHO supports all cholera treatment

facilities to ensure safe water is available for patients and

sanitation measures are respected.

According to Health Cluster partners, as of 14 Jun 2011 there were 38

cholera treatment centres and 216 cholera treatment units functioning

in Haiti. Most of the facilities are financed by NGOs. While support

continues in Port-au-Prince, many NGOs are scaling down operations in

rural areas and transferring responsibilities to the MoPH, which does

not have sufficient funds to cover health personnel.

the epidemic of _V. cholerae_ continues to plague Haiti. The country

had major problems with potable water which was made disastrously

worse by the earthquake.

The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) yesterday, Wed 29 Jun 2011,

called the country's cholera epidemic out of control, and asked the

Government to be more responsible in dealing with society's ample

segments of poverty.

CMD president Senen Caba also said he doubts the Health Ministry's

claims of a lower infant mortality rate.

He affirmed that there are more than 15 000 cholera cases and dozens

of deaths which haven't been properly reported, citing hospitals in

Santo Domingo, San Pedro (east), San Cristobal, ElĂas Pina and La

Romana as having the most patients.

Caba affirmed that on average the hospitals receive 30 cases per day.

Most of the patients reside in poor barrios in greater Santo Domingo

and several provinces.

The doctors said the evidence the epidemic has gone out of control is

that the Health Ministry has requested meetings with leaders of the

water sector.

Monday, April 11: Anti-Fracking Event in Albany, NY

On Monday April, 11th, hundreds of New Yorkers from across the state will be in Albany at the State Capitol for a rally to protect our water, health, and communities from the documented dangers of dirty gas drilling called hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” (See what we are doing about fracking in NY state today; http://eany.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=79&Itemid=116) After the rally, these New Yorkers will meet with state lawmakers to share their concerns about fracking. If you can’t make it to Albany for the rally, send someone in your place. Your gift of $32 will pay for one New Yorker to join us for this important day. Please help us bring folks from across the state to speak out on this issue with your donation today; https://secure3.convio.net/eany/site/Donation2?df_id=1317&1317.donation=form1&JServSessionIdr004=jz2bqv8892.app334b Environmental Advocates of New York is working hard with a diverse coalition of groups to coordinate the fracking rally. We are renting two buses to bring activists from Syracuse and New York City to the state capital to speak up on behalf of our water and our health. The buses cost $3,200, and we want to be able to bring as many New Yorkers to Albany as possible. We have more than $1,100 already! We need to raise this money by Saturday, April 9th, to get the buses ready for Monday’s rally. We’re encouraging rally participants to wear blue to highlight the need to protect New York’s water from fracking. We want to bring a sea of blue to Albany and you can help New York’s leaders see blue on April 11th with your gift right now. The more New Yorkers we can bring to Albany, the stronger our message will be. Let’s show our leaders that we’re committed to protecting our precious water resources from Buffalo to the Bronx. We’re not willing to put short-term profits ahead of the long-term health and safety of our water and our families. Thank you for all you do. Sincerely, Marcy Stengel Membership Director P.S. We know not everyone can join us for this event. But if you can’t join us, consider sending someone to the rally to stand with us. Please chip in today. Natural News Updates: Radiation Truth, FDA and Your Right to Natural Food, Safe Foods, etc.

Dear NaturalNews readers, When reading about Fukushima and radiation, you may not want to get your information from the mainstream media. As it turns out, a lot of the reporting published on some of the top-name news websites from around the world would flunk high school physics on the topic of radiation. Today, I break down an Associated Press report that demonstrates a shocking lack of knowledge about radiation and physics. And this is the news source that gets reprinted in newspapers all across the world! Read more in my article: http://www.naturalnews.com/031935_mainstream_media_millisieverts.html In an eye-opening revelation, the FDA has actually said the American people have no natural right to food unless the FDA gives you permission first. Seriously. Read more at: http://www.naturalnews.com/031934_FDA_food_freedom.html What should you do with fresh spinach that might actually be good for your children? Just kill it! That's what a microbiologist says: There's no such thing as "safe" fresh spinach. Incredible: http://www.naturalnews.com/031933_spinach_e_coli.html Have you read about the experiment using microwaved water that actually killed the plants instead of keeping them alive? I wonder what microwaved food does to your body? http://www.naturalnews.com/031929_microwaved_water_plants.html

Citizens of NE Japan Warned to Stay Indoors as Radiation Levels Rise

3.31 2011 Update: ALERT: Dangerous levels of radiation are now escaping the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and in Tokyo and northeastern Japan residents are being warned to stay indoors on 3.31.2011, and NOT to drink the tap water, or bathe in it. There is such a scarcity of news on this issue in the USA that I would venture to call it a virtual "news blackout" on how much radiation is now passing over the continental US. The weather website WoWeather.com indicates that plumes reaching US shores and washing over the mainland have tiny to negligible levels of radioactive material. But those living in Japan near the Fukushima Plant, up to a 50 mile radius at least, should remain indoors on 3.31.2011. Go to these links on the www.woweather.com international weather forecasting site to see up to the minute jet stream flows for airborne Iodine-131 and Caesium-137: ALERT: For those in Japan stay indoors on 3.31.11 due to dangerous radiation plume from Fukushima plant. watch?v=Puo59a5sTC4 http://www.woweather.com/weather/news/fukushima?LANG=us&VAR=niludmanc131&HH=0 http://www.woweather.com/weather/news/fukushima?LANG=us&VAR=niludmanc137&HH=0&LOOP=1
